Settling the Stretch Mark Debate Once And For All!

Wondering how to make stretch marks fade or how to remove them faster? Want to know how not to get stretch marks? Seeking a treatment for removing stretch marks?

If you’ve answered yes to all the questions mentioned above, you’re at the right place.

Pregnancy is one the main factors that contribute to stretch marks. However, there are also several other factors apart from these. These include genetics, family history, one’s skin type, and more.

It is important to note that stretch marks don’t look alike and vary from person to person, depending on many factors, such as how long a person has had them for and where they are on the body.

The main cause of stretch marks is genetics and the amount of stress on your skin. In addition to that, your body’s level of the hormone Cortisol also plays a part as it weakens the elasticity of the skin.

There’s tons of information circulating around stretch marks – and in all honesty, most of it is false.

To deal with stretch marks, you have to know what they are and what measures you can take to prevent them in the first place.

What Are Stretch Marks?

Skin stretches that are white, purple, pink or even red and spread out on your skin are known as stretch marks. Stretch marks appear when the collagen and elastin in your skin break down due to sudden expansion.

The skin expansion is caused by rapid weight gain like obesity, or increased muscles due to weight training, and even phenomenon like pregnancies or growth spurts in young people. In other words, when your skin stretches, it breaks, and you’re left with stretch marks.

Stretch marks, scientifically known as striae distensae, are a common form of skin scarring that often appears as narrow lines or streaks on the skin's surface. These marks are the result of rapid stretching of the skin, often associated with sudden growth or weight gain, and are particularly common during puberty, pregnancy, and with significant changes in body mass due to weight lifting or obesity. Stretch marks can occur on various body parts, including the abdomen, breasts, hips, flank, buttocks, and thighs. They begin as reddish or purple lesions (striae rubra), which are slightly raised and can be itchy. Over time, these lesions typically fade to a lighter, almost translucent color (striae alba), becoming less noticeable.

The appearance of stretch marks can vary depending on skin type, color, and condition. While they pose no health risk, many individuals seek treatments for cosmetic reasons. Options range from topical creams and laser therapy to microdermabrasion and other dermatological procedures. However, it's important to note that complete removal of stretch marks is often not possible, and many treatments primarily aim to reduce their appearance.

The development of stretch marks is also influenced by genetic factors, and some people are more prone to them than others. Despite their prevalence, stretch marks can sometimes affect an individual's self-esteem, leading to a demand for more effective treatment options and preventive measures.

The Million Dollar Question: Will Stretch Marks Ever Go Away?

Unfortunately, no.

But don’t stop reading, the following information is crucial.

Stretch marks that are in hues of pink and red are fairly new ones, and they do have a great chance of healing and minimizing. However, older ones which are either white or silver may take some time – or may not fade at all. Stretch marks, once formed, typically do not disappear completely. However, they do change over time and can become less noticeable. Initially, stretch marks often appear as reddish or purplish lines on the skin, and they might also feel slightly raised and can be itchy. This stage is known as striae rubra. Over time, these marks gradually fade to a lighter, more silvery color and become less pronounced; this stage is known as striae alba.

While stretch marks tend to diminish in intensity and visibility, they usually do not go away entirely on their own. The extent to which they fade can depend on a variety of factors, including the skin's natural elasticity, skin color, and the severity of the stretch marks.

So What Can I Do?

Your skin needs nutrients to keep its elasticity and strength. Making sure your skin is hydrated, moisturized and retains water is essential.

Not only do these ingredients help to keep your skin’s tautness and self protective properties intact, but they also help to avoid your skin from breaking in times of weight gain. In other words, skin that is dry, thin or weak is more prone to stretch marks.

Esther August 01, 2021

I have always been so ashamed and embarrassed by my stretch marks and have been trying to get them disappear for so long. I just couldn’t come to terms with the fact that they were a part of me and I shouldn’t feel bad about them.
